At Camp Tawingo you will find a 220 Acre Site with seclusion and privacy, a junior mountain, and evergreen and hardwood forests with white and yellow birches which surround the cabins and border the shores. The area invites activities which help children to develop an ecological approach to the out-of-doors. The environment of a swamp in addition to that of open meadows presents many living things to see, explore, and conserve. From a tiny frog in hand to the sight of a majestic Blue Heron, an attitude is engendered toward nature awareness.
Comfortable Cabins that are permanent, well-spaced buildings - electricity, cross ventilation, screens, hot and cold water, showers and washrooms for each cabin. There are 7 or 8 campers and one counsellor to a cabin. The Pop Pearse Lodge, four Recreation Rooms, Arts & Crafts building, Nature area, Woodworking Building, Campfire Areas, Outtrip Building, Library, Health Centre, and an All-Purpose Building are centrally located.
The Pop Pearse Lodge includes a Dining Area for boys and girls, a modern up-to-date Kitchen, four Recreation Rooms, two fireplaces and Library. We utilize the very latest ideas in food service, sanitation, and efficiency accompanied by a bright, fresh, modern design.
Summer Camp Programs
Our Waterfront Program
Our waterfront program offers excellent swimming and boating opportunities on Lake Vernon. Lake Vernon is at the head of a "chain" of Muskoka Lakes offering clean, clear, soft water with an average summer water temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. There are well-supervised, safe, sandy beaches and swimming that sets a new standard in enjoyment and safety. There is a fine fleet of row boats, canoes, kayaks, and sailboats for campers and staff to use.
Our Campcraft Program
Crestwood is the home of our campcraft program. Here, campers learn skills in knot tying, fire building, map and compass, outtripping, woodsmanship, hiking, and cooking. There are opportunities for campers to go on outtrips ranging from overnight to five days. There is also an opportunity for the camper who is 14-16 years old and has achieved a Fox Crest to go on either a Wilderness Journey (girls) or a Voyageur Adventure (boys) that is 15 days long.
Our Nature Program
SWAMP Lodge is the home of our Nature Program. At SWAMP Lodge campers will learn about astronomy, plants, animals, rocks and minerals, weather, ecology, gardening, and nature crafts. In SWAMP Lodge there is a nature museum where campers can see up close some different elements of nature ranging from animals and birds to fish and small aquatic life.
Our Sports Program
Out on the Sportsfield is where all the sports action takes place. There is a very broad range of activities in which campers can participate. Some of the different sports that we offer are: mini-putt, archery, tennis, badminton, ball hockey, baseball, basketball, football, frisbee golf and ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, orienteering, soccer, table tennis, tetherball, and volleyball. On top of teaching the different sports, there are many opportunities for campers to sign up and participate in different tournaments.
Our Special Programs
Our special programs are a highlight of Camp. Some of the special things that happen are All Camp Programs (Olympics, Ray Marinko Relay), All Girls programs and All Boys programs. During the summer there is an opportunity for the campers to perform in the musical presentation. In the past some of the musicals have been "Happy Feet", "The Wizard of Oz", and "The Lion King". During each session there is a Native Council. This is a look back at what it may have been like to live as a North American Native. During this day there are activities that follow a Native theme. Campers participate in Native challenges and games. The summer is capped off with a giant Banquet and a singsong.
Camp Organization
The Program Staff make certain that activities truly reflect the needs and interests of the campers. Activities change and develop as campers grow in skill and maturity. The vitality of the group relationships leads to strong and enduring friendships. We engage experienced specialists in swimming, canoeing, sailing, out-tripping, campcraft, nature lore, Native-crafts, athletics, music, and leadership training. Camp Tawingo has one staff member for every three campers.
The Counselling Staff is composed of caring people most of whom have camping backgrounds of their own. While education and personal achievement are important in choosing our staff, we place the greatest emphasis on counsellors who love children, who provide good examples in their personal habits, who are youthful in spirit yet mature in judgement, who are competent in outdoor living skills and who have a good sense of humour.
The Medical Staff consists of four registered nurses who are at Camp throughout each Camp period. There is a local doctor on call and a modern hospital within 10 kilometres of Camp in Huntsville. At Camp, there is a well-equipped Health Centre.
The Camper learns to make decisions, to exercise initiative, and to take on responsibility only through experience. Camp Tawingo offers each camper every possible opportunity for self-expression, for choice, for decision-making, and for the assumption of responsibility for his/her own and the group's plans.
